DEGERANDO, Joseph-Marie The Observation of Savage People. With a Preface by E.E. Evans-Pritchard. Berkeley University of California Press 1969 123 pages plus 4 plates. Fine copy (ownership signature on the flyleaf) in the fine dustwrapper (sticker mark on the front panel and a trifling mark on the spine). Degerando wrote his ''Considerations on the Various Methods to follow in the Observation of Savage Peoples'' as a memoir to serve as guidance to some of the members of the ''Societe des Observateurs de l'Homme'' on an impending expedition to Australia. The originality of the work lies in his recognizing and stating that for the most part observations made by explorers among savages were casual and superficial and therefore did not provide a guide to their customs and thought. It is a major work of anthropology, indeed most of the major techniques of inquiry which anthropology students now take for granted were set in Degerando's paper. Price:
